I am quite interested in learning more about blogging. I know some people that have gone through the program and have been blogging. I already have intentions of using it this semester to get students to help each other out with questions about class. This semester will be one for experimenting with it to see what will and won't work well with my different classes. I'm really hoping this is something the students will use properly and get them interested in learning math.
Any tips for people who have blogged in the classroom, especially a math class? Some of the things I hope to see the blogs used for are homework help, test/quiz review and hopefully discussion of where math is used in everyday life so they can see the connection.

I like your blogspot! I can't wait to see how you use it in the math classroom. Already you are thinking ahead because you used your title and last name for your display name, great thinking! I just changed mine from my first name so that I will be able to use it with my class as soon as I am ready!
ReplyDeleteIn the spirit of "The Thinking Classroom", I'm wondering if you could use the blog to have students write about their thinking process on a particular math problem. In doing this, I wouldn't expect too much from them at the beginning because this type of writing and reflecting and metacognition doesn't happen without practice, but I wonder if you'd see some progress over time?
ReplyDeleteMike, like you I am also planning on using blogging in my class this quarter. In fact, I have already set up a blog for my class (Room 184). However, I have not posted anything yet. Since I teach Social Studies, I am afraid that I can't be of much help for math. However, I do plan to enlist the help of other adults (parents, other teachers, adminsitration) to periodically check in my classroom blog and comment on the student's posts and comments. I hope that it will encourage them to be more thoughtful.
ReplyDeleteFoster, I like your idea of enlisting others to help you "patrol" the blogs. With all of the work we have this semester that would take some of the pressure off of us to know we have others helping us. You should steal his idea Mint Oreo Mike!
